Dr Robert Steinberger-Wilckens
Professor Steinberger-Wilckens is a physicist by training with a specialisation in renewable energies. He has been active in renewable energies, energy efficiency, hydrogen, fuel cells, and electric vehicles over the past 30 years, both in business and academic contexts. Professor Steinberger-Wilckens co-founded engineering consultancy PLANET in 1985, and was the Programme Manager for solid oxide fuel cells at Research Centre Jülich from 2002 to 2012, before joining University of Birmingham in 2012. He currently holds the Chair for Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Research in the School of Chemical Engineering at University of Birmingham, leading a group of 50 lecturers, postdocs, and PhD students, one of the largest academic units working in this field worldwide. His main areas of research interest include solid oxide fuel cells, electrolysers, and reversible cells; green fuel synthesis (methane, ammonia, methanol, etc.); intermediate temperature polymer fuel cells; hybrid energy storage systems; and market introduction of fuel cells and fuel cell vehicles.
